Smart Key not recognised

Having to position the smart key next to the steering column (as per instruction on the display) in order to start the car. Occasionally it tells me that the key is not in the car but all other functions of the key work normally. Tried the spare key and this is the same. Phoned the dealer for advice and they suggested dropping it in next week and leave it with them for 2/3 days (apparently they're busy and might need to order parts). I wasn't expecting them to drop everything but not happy they can't diagnose then at least let me have the car back if they need to order a part.

People have posted similar before, you don't keep the fob near a cell phone? Apparently the screen can act as a signal block forcing you to go through the process you. I stopped keeping phone and fob together and problem has gone.

If you have keyless entry, but even without using it, it must respond to the car's requests if in range so I think the keys are "on" 24-7... used or not. Obviously using key's buttons increases drain as it becomes an active transmitter instead of an active responder? Or have I got that 100% wrong?

Anyway unlikely to help solve this one.

Just had my 21 fpace investigated by dealer for both key fobs not functioning except when positioned next to the sensor below the steering wheel. Cause was water ingress into the boot/trunk where a component integral to the remote key ignition functioning is located. Eventually traced to the two cable looms at the top of the boot/trunk requiring new grommets and clips. Water was tracking down the cable looms into the boot/trunk causing a critical component failure.

The key is an active transponder transmitting 24/7 the batteries last around 2 yrs, they are standard coin cells, pries the key open and change them yourself. Any key problems change batteries a first action.
