3G to 4G Upgrade, anyone interested?

So 3G in the US started being switched off in Feb 2022. Europe will follow soon with end of life for 3G planned for 2023.

So can we all send Jaguar a message asking about replacement of 3G comms modules ? The more owners who ask the greater the possibility that they will offer it. If not we can look into a private upgrade plan.

Any takers ?

I've been looking at the various Telematics boxes used & they are simple to replace. But needs buy in from
Jag or whomever provides their remote access.

What I've not been able yo ascertain is how the modem or simm slot in the armrest integrates with the Telematics or ICTP systems. Don't want to pull my car apart to find out. Anyone know ?

No one really showed interest. So I gave up researching this & went with the 4G dongle in the arm rest creating an in car wifi hotspot. Connect ICTP to this wifi & bobs your uncle. Data only sim from vendor of your choice & away you go. I found a very short stiff usb cable such that the dongle lives on the mini useless shelf under the rear of the arm rest.

Been there for close to 2 years & works great. I was considering fitting it elsewhere but its out of the way where it is & I can check its status just by opening the arm rest 👍

R U sure thats the right part ?

When I looked at this originally the mobile module is in the boot side wall !? And would definitely need coding to your car & updated on Jag's systems to mate the VIN to the IMEI number !

So you require more than just the telematics swap. That as you say is a simple car program job. But the IMEI number of the unitis coded into the Jaguar remote system. Thus if you change the Telematics your car will no longer be connected to Jaguar, as you need them to update your vehicle record with the new device ID. So a simple swap won't do.

Re the cost, a simple 4/5G capable phone can be had for very little money. Jaguar know that most of their vehicles over 3yrs old are in the second or third tier owner groups, so they can't charge premium prices for a replacement module like they do for initial owners (usually better off persons). So if they did offer a replacement it would have to be reasonably priced if they want to sell any. So in all likelihood they will just abandon us.

The only saving grace may be that Land Rover still use the same systems so they would not have to create a new production line. The more people that enquire the more they may be inclined to provide a solution. That said, most drivers of all makes have zero clue, they just buy & drive. I asked a good friend who had had some trouble with his Audi what engine type was in it, he had no clue! And that is the problem.

Apologies I thought 2G was a 3G typo in the previous post. I see that gov has brought forward permitted 2G retirement to be as soon as each provider thinks its possible on their network. So could be any time between now & 2033. Whereas I was expecting it to be in 2032-2033.

So say good bye to in car data services at some point in the next few years :(

Ah the relentless march of progress. Never seen 4/5G in many places I go, many more have zero mobile signal, so those dark areas will expand. It's like going back to the dark ages!
But its progress apparently 🤷‍♀️ Arnie will sort it once he escapes his datacentre containment field 😂

No I heard ya right. But its the getting Jaguar to do the system update for your VIN. I know they do it for faulty units, but that's because they have to. I can't find any public record of Jag doing diddly for any "elected" post build changes.

I like you understand that this is NOT rocket science but you'd think it was when you deal with any large company. I'm sure someone will see the advantages of building a universal interface for older cars telematic systems if there is a demand.

Like my friend who just replaced his XKR in car system with a 3rd party screen unit which brings it bang up to date & allows Internet via a paired mobile, so no need of in car mobile services. A simple Bluetooth or WiFi unit could be made to take advantage at home. But never expect a car electronics designer to use logic! Or most Dev's for that matter, they have been the bane of my life professionally as well as personal equipment wise for over 30years & I think I'm on my 4th generation of new 12year olds. I can't wait to retire & stop playing hamster on the wheel 😂

I was surprised the head unit supports local WiFi for Smart info etc. So they could if they chose to update the software to expand the use of that feature. With a VPN to Jaguar HQ for whatever info the car needs to send/receive!

We did something similar in a place that shall remain nameless, but us 3rd Party bods could not use our company supplied laptops due to no internet access for our company VPN. The answer was a 3rd party auto VPN box, that we would plug into the site network & then plug our laptops into it. It called the site internet gateway device & created a VPN to it whilst isolating our laptops from the site network & allowed us to tunnel our company VPN through the onsite VPN & hey presto.

A dirt cheap solution to an awkward traffic problem.
