Re: Stolen velars
Wouldn't the thief remove the sim card, meaning the app won't share the location of the car?
Re: Stolen velars
The location info uses the built in SIM so not simply a case of ejecting it. I'm sure the built in SIM can be disabled but is probably not quick and easy.CambridgeM wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 7:22 amWouldn't the thief remove the sim card, meaning the app won't share the location of the car?
There have been reports of cars that have been stolen being abandoned in lonely areas and it is thought that if the car is not recovered by the owners or the police in a day or so the thieves then return and move the car on.

Re: Stolen velars
the only problem is that to block GSM signal is way easier.
alternative tracking security systems use longer length radio waves which are way more difficult to jam.

Thanks Jim - I do occasionally wake up in the night and worry, so knowing that is reassuring. I'll just check the app and go back to sleep.
Re: Stolen velars
Would a PIN code or finger print, after you get into the car work to start the engine and stop the theft

Not sure if this will help car manufacturers to be more proactive , but naming and shaming is no bad idea.

Re: Stolen velars
June16, hopefully it will cause improvements by manufacturers. JLR have had a better solution for some time that they are fitting to some models but not across the range yet.
My December 18 MY19.5 Velar still uses the old less secure method.
434MHZ/NON UWB DR LK FREQUENCY
In the Topix extract above for my car if it had a UWB as opposed to a NON UWB solution it would have much better immunity. With the UWB solution the 3 x transmitters and receivers built in the car are used to calculate the distance and direction of the key as it responds (can also be used to open the door that the key holder is approaching) therefore if the time delay is too long it is ignored, I.e. a relay system would fail to unlock the car.
The JLR patent for the UWB system can be read on the internet, I've lost the URL but it is there, on a US patent web site and it was dated about 18 months or so ago if I recall.
