wax after 7 months or polish plus protect or nothing...

Post by dasa75 » Tue Jul 03, 2018 10:26 pm

Evening All.

So FP is 7 months old now, done only just under 4000 miles so its not used daily daily.
i thought a wax treatment would be good now and would take care of the paint thru the summer but my detailer suggesting a clay bar treatment then a polish by hand then a protection coat similar to wax. When i suggested that a polish now maybe too much too soon he said the polish he would use is a very soft cream like polish not harsh at all so it wont cut into the paint. Its not that he is trying to cash in off of me bcoz actually his charge for all he's suggested is quite reasonable. Any opinions please?

You can either spend a lot of money getting it detailed with a coating applied , or, like me

I use autoglym conditioning shampoo and apply Autoglym high definition wax https://www.autoglym.com/ultra-high-definition-wax
I’ve done this from new.
Then Wash and dry every fortnight , wax polish every four months.

After about a year I use Autoglym super resin polish for an anual deep clean and followed by the high definition wax.
https://www.autoglym.com/super-resin-polish

Then back to wash with conditioning shampoo and wax every four months.

For the wheels I use poor boys wheel sealant

A bit of a ritual but I enjoy it 🤔😀

I’ve used Greased Lightning since new. Now 9 months old, and like yours, not used every day, so only have 3000 miles on the clock. Paintwork remains “like new” and water beads off the car for at least 2 or 3 weeks after application. Main advantage is you don’t have to get the bucket or hosepipe out to refresh the shine. I’ve used this on my past 4 or 5 cars with no problems.

My other half uses that , but it doesn’t last as long as a good quality wax. I’m never happy with wiping the dirt into the dry car , it only needs one bit of grit to scratch it.
Each to their own though.

I have a black car so the washing regime is needed more often. By day 3 after a wash the roof and bonnet are covered in pollen etc. I wash weekly using Autoglym shampoo/conditioner then pat dry with large microfiber towel then quick detail with Chemical Guys Quick Detail spray. I have black wheels as well and so far have just washed weekly and they have been fine but will seal before the winter. I am just into my third month of ownership and the dealer applied wax is due to be renewed so I will probably go down the route of a full clay using a mitten or bar as some of the paintwork already feels rough in places then use a specialist black treatment like Chem Guys Black Light or similar. The clay may well reveal some fine scratches in which case I will polish out with a DA polisher. Black really shows everything. We have a white and a grey car as well and these don't need half as much work but it is a satisfying routine

A few weeks ago I spent 3 days on my black X Type working up from clay, scratch removers, polish & finally carnauba wax.

It looked amazing when finished, the paintwork blemish free.

The next day, it was covered in pollen, stuck into the wax.

Spoke to my detailers & he said it was a common problem and I would be better off with a glaze.

Needless to say, I've gone and got the XKR done with the 2 layer gTechniq ceramic coating that I had applied to the F Pace from new.

Anyone want some Meguiar's Carnauba Wax?! :(

Should have used Autoglym HD wax....expensive but the best one around , no pollen stuck to mine.

Clay won’t just reveal some swirls, it’ll cause them as well. Never clay unless you’re going to polish as well.

Menzerna 3800 brings JLR black paint up a treat as a finishing polish after compounding or a polish with more cut.
