Gap between rear seats & parcel shelf

Hi folks,

Can anyone take a quick photo of the point where the rear seats and parcel shelf meet and upload it onto this thread?

I read from the LED/Xenon headlamp thread that some of you wish you had opted for the reclining rear seats because you believe this would negate a gap that otherwise exists. Didn't want to hijack that thread so if anyone can help here that would e fab!

Thanks

Arianne

You would think that the design would have a 'short gap filler' section that slides under the main shelf if reclined or left extended if not used ?

Never mind the gap between the rear seats and the parcel shelf, has anyone noticed the nearly 4" gap between the parcel shelf and the boot door? Regardless of tinted windows, shine a torch at night and anything at the rear of the boot is visible.

I think the issue is more about the quality of the parcel shelf, haven't had anything like that since I bought my wife a Corsa 10 years ago when she passed her test. I know everyone has complained about the quality of the lower door pockets but they don't bother me, the one thing I picked up on when I first viewed the car was the quality of the dreadful parcel shelf......but not enough to put me off this beauty!

Let's be honest, Jag do nice finishes on interior but truly practical is usually won by the French.... Hate saying this but Renault and Citroen do put some thought into their interiors.

Jaguar should buy a couple, see the clever ideas and then make them with leather finish....

I'm going to get flak for this post...

No flak from me but I would personally give that compliment to the Japs, the rear seat quick release levers were originally by Mazda, I think they even gave it a special name at the time.

Personally I like all the large gaps around the parcel shelf means I leave it in place and the dog has plenty of light and air getting in!

I have done the same thing, it saves trying to put up the stupid luggage restraining net that I got with the activity pack.

...also for those surplus friends of my kids that won't fit on the rear seats

I can remember my old Grandma used to have a 'draft excluder' that looked like a long Sausage Dog. She would put it along the bottom of a drafty door in winter. This has solved the problem of the long gap behind the rear seats !
So if you see an F Pace with a really old fashion worn out long Sausage Dog across the back seat gap, it's mine   ;)

I can't be bothered to read this whole post, but I have two notches to put my shelf on for either a gap or none.

Am I the only one that has this, or the only one to see it?

If that is true, that would be hilarious

What do you prefer, a bigger one at the front or at the rear? :D

Too much of a good thing does you no good,.. so all I had to do was flip out the little flap on the back of the seats, all sorted.

Just read all of the above as I had been wondering whether there was some 'cure' for what seemed a security concern. For those who think that people are making a mountain out of a mole hill, let me tell you the following:
I am sitting here reviewing the AutoGlass bill for replacing my Rear Windscreen which was smashed on Thursday night by two guys on a Moped in Central London. I had parked to pop into a shop on the way home and, returning, found them smashing the window and grabbing my briefcase which was in the rear COVERED BY THE REAR SHELF ! They had used a torch to look through and seen it through the gap between the rear seats and the parcel shelf. I had decided that this was the setting which probably gave the better security -- but I was obviously proved wrong.
If this can happen, when I have taken the best precautions that are available to me and the security is inadequate -- which it was -- surely Jaguar need to take some action. For all the rest of you, take heed of my experience !
Has anyone raised this with them and got any response ??

Wow, this puts the issue on a new level. JLR should know about this. Then find a solution. It maybe a recall to fit an over riding flap to block the gap or an extra that can be purchased and fitted.
To leave this as it is can only be seen as bad after care for the customers that have committed to a purchase.

Can I ask if you have privacy glass and/or was it dark/dusk?

I've tried to see into the boot via this gap, and to be honest cant see a thing.... Daylight or otherwise..

I don't have security glass and to be honest I can't see into my boot as it is dark in there compared to the surrounding ambient light.

I could see that it might be possible with a torch to see into the very back of the boot area through this slight but it would be impossible to see any more than that because the angles are all wrong, unless someone climbed on to the roof and I had the pano shade open then possibly they could see further, though it would be a lot easier and less suspicious to simply smash the back window and help ones self to the contents of the boot.

In about 2005 I had my car broken into in a football ground car park while watching the match, nothing visible as it was a Mazda RX 8 with a boot, about a dozen other cars were also broken into.

In the early 2000s in Hemel Hempstead I and a load of colleagues were having a social after work on a Friday evening along with a couple of other similar groups of people and when the first person left to go home, we had all only been there for about an hour, he came back in to inform us that all the cars towards the back of the car park had had their boots forced open and peoples laptop bags had all been stolen, luckily my car was at the front of the car park in full view of the pub entrance and anyone passing. Most of the cars at the time were saloon cars with no view into the boots at all, however the pub was frequently used by groups like ours on Friday evenings before people set off home and I suspect it was targeted along the same lines as when bank robbers are asked why they rob banks the answer is 'that's where the money is' :D

A few years earlier in Gillingham my car was parked outside the flat I had at the time in a small parking area and it and all the other cars had been broken into (again no view into the boot) and when I phoned the police to report the crime they explained that over 200 cars (so far reported) had been broken into over night in some form of criminal raid.

In the mid 80s I had my car broken in to while parked in Poole station car park while I went into London for the day on business, nothing visible as it was a saloon car.

Like the examples above I suspect most car break ins are probably just opportunistic and many of the break ins earn the thieves nothing of any value with the possible exception of the targeted raid on the car park in Hemel where it was a known location for business people to hang out and reasonable to assume they all had laptops in their boots.

My losses for all the above, a couple of pairs of sunglasses, music cassettes, music CDs, a dangley air freshner  , and about £10-15ks worth of specialist test equipment (from the Gillingham raid) that was all serial number registered and probably not worth anything to the thief as trying to sell it on or have it calibrated would probably have meant a visit by the police!

I agree. I've tried to see in between the gap and you can only see a tiny sliver so I don't think it's a security risk.

I've also had my boot broken into on saloon cars. The worst being when my key was cloned on my M3 and they took £5k worth of camera equipment.

Sorry to read of your issues, it is a strange setup to have the gap but I guess Jaguar would say with the rear seat reclined the gap does not exist, wonder how long before your see on eBay a rear parcel shelf with a flap to cover this area, won't be long I am sure if there is a market for this.

sorry for delay in responding but couldn't access my account for some reason.

No, I don't have privacy glass installed and Yes, it was in the dark -- but streetlights around. Not sure why noone else has this issue as the gap I have is c 4 inches between back of rear seat and start of rear shelf. My rear seats do not recline.

Any other suggestions from anyone?

Well nothing is perfect and if you let it, it is going to drive you crazy...

The gap is for the rear seats to recline into and you can't really notice it from outside with privacy glass. Appreciate it can be seen without privacy glass and you don't have the recline option. Don't know how popular rear seat recline is as an option but clearly every F Pace is designed to accommodate this rather than there being two versions of the parcel shelf fixed in different locations. This is certainly a manufacturing cost issue and perhaps there should have been two parcel shelf options in a perfect world.

Of course, having the rear seat recline is a double edged sword as well. It then poses another problem - is the gap the same size on each side or has one passenger reclined their seat more than another? The seat also reclines two thirds/one third as that is how the seat is split. This can also irritate if you let it. I must admit I have adjusted the seats to the same level of recline on more than one occasion

I used to use a piece of black pond liner to cover expensive items on view in my previous Audi though a small gap at the back of the parcel shelf, maybe that would work?
