Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
Hi,
Just want to start by saying it's not an F-Pace, but a Jag XJL fault.
so my dad has a 2011 Jag XJL with 35,000 miles clocked and just last week the gearbox has gone. We are all surprised, shocked and to be honest pretty annoyed at the fact the gearbox gone after so little miles driven.
The car was towed to our local dealership and we have been told its going to cost £4,500 for a new gearbox!! We've argued the case about the low mileage and also said that we've bought a Jag F-Pace based in this car the service received. But now the service department refuses to provide any kind of compensation and are telling us cough up the £4.5k for the new gearbox.
Can anyone on this forum five some advice on what we should do?
Thanks

Re: Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
Commiserations, that's a real bummer. Car's probably only worth around £15k by now, even with that very low mileage for a 2011, so gearbox and labour is going to cost about a third of it's trade-in value. Only viable option, if it's not already in bits, is to try taking it somewhere other than a main dealer and see if you can get a better deal for repair/replacement. Hope you get a satisfactory resolution.
I'm moving this thread from Main F-Pace Chat into the Off-topic section because the subject isn't related to an F-Pace fault.

Thanks catwoman for the advice.
Re: Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
On an 8yr old car they might offer a discounted labour rate, but I am not surprised that they wont cover it under warranty.
As per Catwoman's advice - you need a reputable indie. Where are you based? (Folks on here may be able to help, but as the FP is a new design most folks are still using the dealer network, so they would have to have experience with another model.... might be better asking elsewhere (such as pistonheads - they have a Jag subforum which seems reasonably active HERE.
Also worth speaking to an autobox specialist - they are likely to be able to refurb/overhaul your existing unit.

Re: Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
Ah OK - there is a very capable Jag indie in Paisley that I have used Prestige which is still a bit far but might be an option if you are looking for somewhere that has a great reputation.

Re: Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
Update - Manufacturers are to contribute 50% to the cost and the gearbox will have 2 years guarantee, What a relief!
Re: Jag XJL Gearbox Fault
That's something. We had similar problem with an 8 year old Cooper S automatic just out of extended warranty by days when auto box went. I was away on a trip abroad and my partner had local Mini garage trailer it away. We were charged nearly £1,000 for analytics, diagnostics and the work they did to get to the point of realising the gearbox was finished. They wanted another £3k from memory for the gearbox and fitting. We found an indie who rebuilt the gearbox for a little over a £1,000. Still, we had already wasted £1k by this point. Specialist independents are the way forward when a car is out of warranty but, to be honest EU legislation means you can use anyone even when the car is in warranty these days, unless it's for actual warranty related work.
