I'm still not 100% sure on what it is I'll actually have to pay. Is it £190 + £310 for the first year or do I have to pay the £500 every year?
The first 5 years i believe for cars that fall in to the grouping from April 2017.

Oh dear!
So if I tax it in February next year it will be due end of January?
Noticed it’s gone up to £190 now as well!
Renesis, your annual renewal will always fall due at end of Feb

Hello All

Can anybody help me out with understanding how I’ve lost a month of road tax?

I took delivery of my car March 30th 2017 and paid on the day for the road tax, and now I’ve just got a reminder from DVLA to renew it by 28th February??? Where has my 12 month gone?

Baffelled, have they made an error?

Thanks
I have always resisted taking delivery of any new car towards the end of the month for this reason. To help my dealer reach a sales target for a rebate I reluctantly agreed to do this once but the dealer paid for 13 months of RFL. A good dealer would do this I guess.
Yes, that happened to me. I wanted to take the car on 1st Feb this year but, obviously with an eye to sales targets, the salesman asked me if I'd take it before the end of Jan. He deducted the value of a month's tax from the price of the car so I didn't have a problem with it.

It wasn't until a few days after I'd signed up for the car that I realised I'd been very lucky so far as the tax was concerned. My car was first registered on 1st March, 2017, i.e. the last month under the 'old' tax system so I paid £135. Had it been registered a month later it would have been under the'new' system involving the extra £310 per year for the next four years. The salesman admitted that he hadn't realised this and wouldn't have relished ringing me with the bad news had the car been registered a month later.

Phew!

I am the same, I picked up on 15 March 2017. I rushed to find one before the 1st April 2017 when I found out this penalty cost was being introduced.
Your dealer has saved you around £1,500 by taxing your car before the 1st of April 2017 as from that date cars over £40k pay a penalty for the first 5 years at £310.00 yearly over and above the annual tax.
So watch out all you who have purchased after 1st April 2017 with a +£40k car. You will have to pay your road tax and the extra £310.00

We are in the best place having purchased in March 2017. Getting a 17 plate car and not having this extra government penalty for having a car over £40k a plus for selling during these 5 years.

It will be a talking point when you get the call asking if you want to upgrade to a newer model

I got mine in September 2017. I knew about this increase in the tax and to be honest I don't care. It did not put me off and I am glad I got the car I did.

My car was registered on 31 March 2017, but my tax came this month to be paid by end March. Not quite sure how I ended up with an extra month. Perhaps they registered the car in March, but only taxed it in April (which is when I picked it up).
