350mm front disks

Post by Watsonroger » Thu Jun 28, 2018 7:54 pm

Hi, I upgraded the front disks on my ordered F-pace Portfolio to the optional 350mm ones. Last weekend a pad wear warning light came on, car just covered 13k, seems a bit soon. Doesn't indicate whether front or rear !!

Looking on the face of the front disks it appears that the installed pads do not cover the complete face of the disks with a 1/2inch not used area around the rim where the pads appear to have no effect.

Anyone else with a similar issue, could it be that the factory installed calipers from the standard non 350mm disks at build time ?

Just popped out and took a pic of mrs mik’s car. 3.0dS so std fit, but you can see the pad covers the full disc face (less 2-3mm inside and outside as normal).

Cheers Mik, I'll try and upload a pic of my issue to clarify the problem.

A small area unrubbed is normal, maybe 5 to 8mm. A light coming on at 13k needs investigating, if there is one pad worn more than the others means the caliper is sticking, neglecting it will score the disc. Those 350mm discs are quite powerful so with normal driving should last a long time but driving style does affect pad wear and an "enthusiastic" style could easily wear pads out in 13k.
Ask to see the pads, if a caliper is sticking it's a warranty job, if all 4 pads on front or rear are worn its wear and tear.

Those discs would be typical of a much older car with far higher mileage, have you had a period that the car has been unused and corrosion become established.

Have to agree with Deltasierra, above, your discs look pretty corroded already. How old is your car? Mine is two years old and is parked outside all the time, but the discs, calipers and clips all still look fresh by comparison to yours . . . photo taken just now . . some corrosion is only to be expected, but your discs, calipers and clips look really old in those pics

Thanks all for input.

Car is not used daily and is parked outside on drive but do agree that compared to other pics mine do seem to be much the worse for wear. I'll be booking the car in to the local Edinburgh dealer in the coming weeks and hopefully they will take this up with Jaguar directly as something is not right.

We do drive over mostly country A & B roads between SW Scotland and Edinburgh which does require a bit of braking but with dogs in the car not driven excessively fast.

Car just picked up from local dealer last Saturday with all new front 350mm disks and pads replaced under warranty, great service from Edinburgh dealer. Rear disks and pads replaced at same time, after discussion with dealer they covered disks (not as badly corroded as fronts) and labour under warranty, I agreed to cover cost of pads. Car now brakes as new. :)
