Hi,
When I ordered my new MY21 F pace I contemplated getting the electronic deployable towbar as a factory option but then decided against it.

However, now I've had the car for many months now, I've been looking to get the towbar installed. Jaguar are quoting in the area of £2k for the towbar and kit then about £800 labour to fit!
When speaking to a few independent towbar specialists the price is significantly less for a detachable at around £800 fitted.
However a few of them have stated they arent sure about being able to re-program to use the trailer assist, camera features etc.. Mixed feedback they can and can't so bit confused. Also saying its likely Jaguar won't do the re program if they hadn't fitted the towbar.

Anyone had any experience of this and advice? Help!

To correctly function, the car requires to be programmed with Pathfinder in order for trailer assist, camera features etc to function. I very much doubt any 3rd party towbar fitting company would possess Pathfinder let alone be able to correctly use it. Hardly any independent Jaguar specialists have it either. You'll need to check with your chosen Jaguar dealer/specialist if they'd be prepared to enable these features, and of course it would be presumed that it would need to have had fitted a genuine Jaguar tow electrics module to be able to communicate. I certainly wouldn't let a 3rd party towbar company "splice" a generic tow electrics kit into my car. I expect their answer would be in the negative. If you only intend to tow a tiny box trailer to the tip a couple times a year then a generic solution may be for you?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm intending towing a caravan, so would like to get the best installation with the features enabled.

A couple of towbar companies said they use genuine Jaguar wiring kit/loom. Which on top of wanting that, I would imagine is needed to ensure my warranty is still valid.

I'm going to swing by in person to one of the Jaguar/land rover independent garages and talk again and see if I can get any clearer. Useful to know about the pathfinder point you mention, so will bring that up as well

Cars prior to 2018 use the older SDD diagnostic system that even home mechanics can obtain, later cars need the newer Pathfinder diagnostics.

The parts can be ordered from Jaguar, there may even be full fitting instructions with the modules, however the towbar company can't reprogram the car without Pathfinder to show it is now fitted and the car is not "self-learning" of such additions, it must be programmed, it will state in the fitting instructions this step is required. I've read some sorry tales where similar had been done to a car but the owner was stuck where the dealer refuses to program it, not having fitted the parts themselves so can't/won't verify what or how they were fitted and the fitting company can't program. It's a very annoying situation with modern cars!

I had an aftermarket towbar fitted with a generic flasher relay, obviously I did not get the extra features stability control etc, also the rear sensors sounded reversing. In practice it was not a problem you spend very little time reversing and the FPace is a very safe tow vehicle if you pay attention to correct load on tow hitch.

I had one fitted by my jag dealer on my previous svr they charged £1970 . Sound £800 more than factory spec the reason they said it was higher is more work removing the bumper .
my new one I specced from factory, your dealer seems a bit steep maybe shop around but I wouldn’t let no backstreet garage touch it

I had the Jaguar deployable towbar retrofitted by the main dealer when we bought the car 2 years ago, then 2 years old. Quote was £1600 , as they needed to change the rear valance as well.
To me it is well worth it, the software works well with hitch assist on the rear view camera, extra button for cycling through the lights to check all the trailer lights, tow-assist, etc. and the towball is completely hidden when stowed.

At the beginning of this year I had an after-market tower fitted to my F-Pace. I took it to a specialist I had used previously; they are based in Lincoln. I specifically asked for a Jaguar wiring loom to be fitted, which they did. Cost in the region of £850 for a detachable bar. I then visited several local towbar specialists who assured me they could code the bar to the car. None of them could. I eventually ended up in Marshalls of Peterborough, my local Jaguar main dealer, who coded the bar for me plus did some other "minor" software updates and charged me £93 for the lot. Very pleased.

This proves not all dealers are the same and some are happy to code the 3rd party fitted towbar. Thanks for the post update.

I'd suggest anyone who wants a 3rd party to fit a tow bar and not a dealer, to actually check their local dealer is willing to code and program the system. There's no point having advanced trailer facilities such as tow assist, rear camera hitch assist, trailer lights check etc and these not working because you thought saving a few bob was better value. If I were to consider buying a used vehicle that was towbar equipped but the electronic supporting systems not functional it'd severely put me off.

Thanks everyone for your info and replies... Glad I don't feel on my own with the confusion!

I think on balance I'm going to have to succumb to paying the premium of going to JLR dealer to ensure I get the features and also warranty. I can't take the risk of getting it done by an in dependant and then have issues with JLR post install Incl programming etc...

I rang around a few JLR dealers and so far there is c. £5-700 difference amongst themselves for an electronic towbar!

I have the electronically deployable towbar on my F-Pace, it's really not needed, a removable one would have been fine in reality, but the car was bought used with it. Very easy to use though and completely hidden when stowed. My friend asked what the button in my boot did, so I told her to press it.... "Oh my gosh, I've given your car an erection!" she exclaimed 🤣

If you want to use the trailer stability function, you'll need the 3 black dots stuck to the caravan, assuming the front window will allow them to be positioned. They're erm, much larger than expected! About 5" in diameter each, total width of the group, I'm guessing, around 14".

I have the factory removable tow bar, it literally just takes a few seconds to attach and remove, and leaves no signs at all that it was there when it's packed away above the spare wheel. I'd certainly choose the detachable one again.

Well, finally getting the towbar fitted today at my dealer. See wht it's like! Also having the recall done on the alternator/tension belt.
Well all fitted and works fine. Very fancy.. And lazy... Just pressing the button and it appears! Also completely hidden when stowed. Had a quick demo by the technician.

When asking about the tow assist part, and the triangle sticker etc... He said oh that isn't part of this set up and only seen it on a manual one. Thought it was a bit strange but he was going to look into it.

Had a phone call about 30 mins later on the way home and said based on my VIN it isn't possible to have it. Very strange?! As have SE dynamic spec with 360 cameras etc...

Think I might get a second option by going to jag customer services direct. Anyone got any info/insight to help with this or have experienced...?

If my 2018 MY F-Pace has it, with it's electrically deployable towbar, your 2021 should too?

All the above comments make interesting reading so my understanding is if I buy a used auto F Pace from a main dealer with warranty a westfalia / brink bar can be fitted with the original Jag wiring loom and all gizmos trailer control rear sensors disabled when reversing etc should work and no additional oil cooling on the gearbox.
I understand a revisit to the main dealer about £100 to have it coded will be required is that correct!
Thanks

I'd check that a dealer is prepared to enable the towbar coding, prior to having one fitted, many won't unless they fit the towbar. If your main dealer is resistant, there's Jaguar specialists who may, you just need to find one.

I had a similar costing when I asked BMW about fitting a towbar to my 3 series, nearly £2K, but was a £400 at order option. They explained that they fitted a larger radiator & some other parts. At the factory that was a minimal build change but at dealer it meant replacing parts which costs £££ & paying for technician time which cost more £££. I assume Jag is the same deal :( If only towing light loads, then no issues, but if towing heavy loads, over long distance with hills, you might need the upgraded parts. Only time will tell.

No radiator change on Jaguars as far as I'm aware of.

I think they fit a bigger auto trans cooler & some other stuff like the reverse sensor disconnect & trailer aiming software etc.
