3G to 4G Upgrade, anyone interested?

Can I bump this please?

I have 2017 S with ICTP and use a data SIM in the armrest for live map routing etc. It looks to be one of the earlier ones limited to 3G (as I have a 4/5G SIM in it yet only says 3G on the ICTP). O2 are ending my PAYG next month (just got the email) ahead of switching off all 3G support. Looking at other operators they're all about to switch off 3G or have already done so.

Has anyone replaced the 3G module yet as Ash asked above and had success? Any other solutions people have done?

I could run a separate USB powered hotspot router in the armrest but would prefer to resolve the limitation in the car itself. Creating a hotspot from my phone will mess up my wireless Android Auto setup so that option is out too.

(Mods apologies if you think this is reviving an old thread. Am happy to make this a new one but was trying to keep the discussion in one place.)

Thank you. Sorry to hear that there wasn't the interest. I've got two USB powered dongles sitting in a drawer so will copy you on that route if needed.

I went through the parts catalogue to try and check if the part you reference above JPLA-19E110-BB was indeed the same as the 3G, but 4G, however the Jaguar catalogue is a mess for that part with there having been so many variations over the years.

I've going to get my Start/Stop button coded out (made 'sticky') so will ask that company what they think. I'm happy to get the replacement SIM reader coded and fit it myself. Just want to check that it's able to be coded first, or if it might even be plug and play... I wish.

Failing that.... 4G dongle. Thanks.

I've ordered a used one of the part that you thought would be 4G Mohawk. The factory date on the part is 2018 at least.
Have got to strip the interior to fix a wet carpet so think I may as well plug it in while I'm at it and see if my ICTP recognises it. Will update how I get on.

Can confirm that the 2018 onwards part isn't plug and play. I bought one and fitted it. The media functions work so I'll keep it in the car, but no 4G. So am now using a dongle like the rest of ya.
Maybe it would work if programmed in SDD, I may explore that later. But the car certainly isn't actively looking for it.

In the scheme of things these cars all have bigger issues on the horizon when the 2G switch off comes. The telematics modules have fallen back on 2G now that 3G has ended (only o2 still do it and they're ending it this year). The following 2G switch off is going to happen a lot sooner than the regulator expected. Unsurprisingly telecoms companies aren't keen on supporting legacy technology that rurals communities depend on if they don't have to. Rant over. Going to stick my head in the sand about that for now.

The SOS and roadside assistance functions.
Also the Remote app. So tracking, security, journeys, remote climate etc. Probably not a big deal for anyone not using them but annoyingly I use Remote every day.
Other things may also stop, those are just the ones I know about. Have been more focussed on losing connectivity to our village, we're all stuck on 2G now that 3G is gone, when that goes we're cut off

Yeah my test there was to gauge whether the centre console unit was effectively just a cable extension... which it is.
I've since looked into replacing the telematics module with the later, 4G unit. In 'theory' that should be doable and it just require coding to the ECU (I looked into an indie who specialises in module upgrades doing it). But I've held off attempting it as I want to see what Jaguar does when 2G is switched off sooner than everyone expected it to be. Jaguar will likely abandon us and then I'll try the DIY route, but there's a slim chance they might offer an expensive official upgrade solution if they think they'll be able to sell enough Jaguar Remote subscriptions. iPace, E-Pace, XF and XE cars of the same generation are all in the same boat.

So you require more than just the telematics swap. That as you say is a simple car program job. But the IMEI number of the unitis coded into the Jaguar remote system. Thus if you change the Telematics your car will no longer be connected to Jaguar, as you need them to update your vehicle record with the new device ID. So a simple swap won't do.

Re the cost, a simple 4/5G capable phone can be had for very little money. Jaguar know that most of their vehicles over 3yrs old are in the second or third tier owner groups, so they can't charge premium prices for a replacement module like they do for initial owners (usually better off persons). So if they did offer a replacement it would have to be reasonably priced if they want to sell any. So in all likelihood they will just abandon us.

The only saving grace may be that Land Rover still use the same systems so they would not have to create a new production line. The more people that enquire the more they may be inclined to provide a solution. That said, most drivers of all makes have zero clue, they just buy & drive. I asked a good friend who had had some trouble with his Audi what engine type was in it, he had no clue! And that is the problem.
Maybe you misread what I meant by program? Yes the IMEI would be updated too. That's doable. From my discussions the ECU can be updated to read the new IMEI which Remote ties to the VIN. But if Remote does rely specifically on the IMEI then Jaguar can be notified to update that manually.
Many faulty telematics modules have been replaced in dealer workshops already, and each new module has a new IMEI. So it's not unusual. We're just talking about doing it electively. Used 4G tele modules are fairly cheap.
My own tablet supports programming a new telematics unit to the car, but I'd rather not test it myself as I use Remote daily and 2G still works. Hence why I was looking to a more experienced professional with a current SDD and Pathfinder account.
You can swap out the instrument cluster for the digital dash, swap out ICT for ICTP, and do loads of other complex mods. It just requires programming and Jaguar can then update anything they need to on their end (if they do need to).
