Hello I am new here.
I have just been to JLR main dealer in London to view an F-Pace. It is a 2 litre diesel with 38,000 miles. Full service history all servicing from main dealer. 1 previous owner. Comes with 1 year warranty (I will buy 3 years). Full spec with everything including sliding panoramic roof.
But here is the problem: people are telling me to stay away from the 2 litre diesel and get the 3 litre, - which will be higher mileage and have 2 to 3 owners in my budget.
Are they correct in telling me to stay away from the 2 Litre diesel regardless of low mileage and full main dealer service history?
Or am I actually alright in purchasing a 1 owner low mileage F-Pace 2 litre diesel if it has low mileage and full main dealer service history?

I am really stuck and decided to get some real world answers from actual owners of the car.

Thank you all in advance.

I wouldn't buy another 2.0 litre diesel of that age because of the potential problems you might have unless the service history shows that the timing chain, tensioners etc have all been changed for the newer, revised, items. The V6 is a better option but even then there are possible issues. The new 6-cylinder engines are a vast improvement but I guess budgetary considerations come into play.

If you do decide to go ahead then give it a test drive with the engine at about 1,750 rpm and under load and check for vibration. 70 mph on a motorway in 8th gear and a incline in the road or acceleration that is gentle enough not to drop it to 7th gear should do it.

Have you looked at the Skoda Kodiaq?

Thank you so much for your helpful response. I will screenshot this so that I can do everything you suggested on the test drive.
My mate recommended the Skoda as well as a KIA.
But to be honest I have been driving a 2 door 56 plate Ford Fiesta for the last few years as I saved for my mortgage deposit. Bought my house last year and spent this year doing it up. So now I want a family car but a car that I'm also proud of (if that makes sense). Something to have for the next 5 years at least and with a baby on the way, - something with good size and space. The look on my Mrs face when she sat in the f-pace absolutely melted my heart, she was beaming with joy. We are currently looking at the Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q5 and Volkswagon Tiguan (in that order).
For the money the Jaguars in my search have the lesser mileage and owners but I now suspect you have highlighted why it's such a bargain.
I will check out that Skoda on autotrader to at least see how it looks as my options might be more limited than I thought.
Thank you again for your reply as it was important for me to actually get advice from am actual owner.

with the extended oil change intervals ( 19,000 to 21,000mi) The timing chains take quite a beating.
JLR has admitted that the quality of the originally fitted chains are inferior and they've upgraded.
it's a bit of a coin toss on failure rates, and if I remember correctly that year has an injection pump sprocket failure that needed to be upgraded as well.
I love my F-pace 2.0 Diesel. but my chains failed at 20,000 miles, but now upgraded under warranty.

Yes there's reports of failed engines with rattly timing chains and exploding turbos. But as said, there's many hundreds of thousands of engines that haven't destroyed themselves fitted across the whole range of JLR cars. BMW have engine issues on some of theirs, as do Toyota, and Citroen etc.

Avoid any diesel engined car if short and/or slow journeys are your norm.

You might be lucky, do check exactly what the warranty you are buying actually covers an engine rebuild will cost at least ÂŁ10k. If you plan to do a lot of short journeys forget diesel all together, emission problems will be very costly
