Dash cams advice

I'm investigating the installation of a front/rear camera system (with movement sensor) to capture the car park bandits for my F Pace that's due soon.

I had hoped the jaguar 360 camera system would serve this function (which it doesn't as far as I can tell) but anyway its too late now I'm past the change date on my order (delivery due early July). Now looking at aftermarket camera kits, my preferred choice so far is a Blackvue DR650-2Ch system it does the above plus acts as usual evidence gatherer in collisions etc.

Probably early days yet but has anyone done anything similar? Or can anyone recommend a supplier/fitter of these kits or better in SE London?

The RAC online shop sells the one mentioned above and they will come to you and hard wire fit them. The price for the F750 fitted is £350

Thanks both of you I shall investigate. The blackvue is two separate cameras one for the rear which I think given the small rear window could be beneficial. But thanks for the RAC tip too.

Thinkware F750 also has dual camera option, so this looks like a good choice to me, reviews of camera good, RAC fitting less so, but its probably down to the person who turns up.

I invested in a Blackvue two camera system a year or so ago, after a lorry drove across the back of my wife's Peugeot RCZ when on motorway and somehow got away with denying hitting her!

They are not cheap, but a terrific piece of kit, and I'll be installing a similar system into my F Pace when it arrives.

Yes but as the camera is at the front of the car facing rear wards you don't get that as good a video should something happen as you are filming yourself and the back of the car (rear passengers) and the a smallish rear window on the FP. So if you are fussy, a 2 camera system is a must as it will catch much more detail should the unfortunate happen (accident/vandalism). Don't have any experience of RAC fitting and can't find any reviews online of them fitting dash cams, I usually use my local independent specialist car hi-if outlet but not many left as all cars have in built stereo systems. Can't imagine much can go wrong with someone reasonably competent hard wiring a dash cam, have done it myself plenty of times in the past.

Both blackvue dr650 and thinkware f750 do actually come as two units for front and rear mounting. The rear window size is definitely a limiting factor for single cameras that have front and rear lenses.
I am concerned about the installation as I want the cameras to be as inobtrusive as possible with little wire showing. Finding power supply will be issue too.

Also the FPace portfolio has panoramic roof so hiding wires going to be a challenge!

I fitted a Blackvue front and rear camera system myself ...... Relatively easy if you are brave enough. Only area I found where I couldn't completely hide the wiring was on the rear camera as due to the construction of the tailgate (composite) I couldn't get behind the trim. Everywhere else is hidden, including hard wired into the power supply where the fuse box is housed in nearside front foot-well.

I have some additional 'boring' photo's if anyone interested :)

I currently have a BlackVue DR650GW-2CH (along with a Cellink Battery B) in my Escalade EXT and have been wanting to install the newer DR650S-2CH in my FP. I would love to see any additional pictures you have of your install. Thanks!

Have to admit when this came up 6 months ago I thought it's something as a person I wouldn't want to use or resort to but I think I've come around to your thinking. Had an incident the other day somebody drifted across a roundabout without any notion I was there so I beeped. He ended up reacting and "chasing" me though I wasn't the hare or he'd have heard my V6 disapearing into the sunset. I was fully prepared to stop get out and inform him politely of his errors.
I also think if you have a newish "nice" you may get a few more reactions or idiots - I've had the hand shuffle from a car full with his family and kids.

So having the camera will protect me when I'm in the right and I need to use it.

Seen the F770 front and rear with fitting and hardwire for parking for £348 with RAC so that doesn't sound bad.

Now considering it.

Just a question - in the event of an accident, can the footage be seized by police to incriminate the owner? E.g. If you were on the motorway, and had perhaps crept slightly above 70 mph prior to an accident, could this be used against you?

Interesting point growler, I hadn't even considered this and had been looking at dashcams, I'm swiftly ceasing to consider it as too many cons for a few small pros. A quick search seems to say; Yes they can, so long as they believe it might hold evidence that will show an offence has been committed. And important to note here it is just a belief and irrelevant of if it turns out an offence was / wasn't committed. Furthermore it seems you could face criminal charges should you refuse to give the police the footage, withholding evidence. And in the event of an accident if you no there is footage of the incident it is your obligation to provide it to insurance / courts. If you do not provide footage to an insurance company, it might be seen as that it will incriminate you and then your claim can be found against you. If you do not provide it to a court and it becomes known you can be held in contempt.

Yes they can look backwards at the whole file and use it against you (but only really useful to them if it stores the speed/GPS data)...... So I decided to get the camera version that does not have GPS info.

Having had a lorry driver get away with running into the back of my wife's Peugeot RCZ, when he wouldn't have stood a chance if I had the camera at the time and it consequently costing me ££'s I still feel that the camera footage is better to have than to not.

Thanks @AndyS. The pictures you posted will be a big help when I start my install.

Most of these dash cams (the BlackVue DR650 series for sure) have an option to NOT display or record your speed. I'm sure it's to protect you from incriminating yourself in court.

Of course the issue is are they accurate? Isn't it true that the speed systems in police cars have to be calibrated so they can be used as evidence? So while the dash cam can give an idea of speed I think any half decent lawyer could argue that you have to prove its accuracy at the time of the incident. I'll take my chances, yes I may occasionally exceed the speed limit, rarely by much and I'd rather have the evidence in the dash cam memory because my concern is numpties in towns more than motorway incidents.

BTW I eventually installed the Blackvue 650 twin camera set up but installed low on the front screen and ran the wires in the "slot" in the dahs to each side, one for power the other to the rear camera, I posted my how to a while back.

So far the camera seems reliable, the GPS signal isn't always "live" but I think that's the same with the car itself, some of my routes according to Jaguar have been through several houses and fields... trust me I haven't off-roaded yet and I haven't gate crashed any parties in my car either! :)

Just had a Thinkware f750 fitted to my f pace. Hard wired with no cables showing at the front. Had a problem with the rear camera and wire shows running across top of the window. Problem is that being a hatchback with no obvious access for cables you have to run it around the edge of the window. Other than that it's working great.

I am about to pull the trigger and go for a Blackview or Thinkware Duel camera set up, however now having second thoughts about fitting the rear camera. Basically I do not want any wires showing.. It's a pity the rear cameras could not be fitted to part of the rear trim, and not the window.
