Hi Ive got the ICT and have installed the 3 Sim, enabled the hot spot, the sim is working fine and showing 4G signal, however just under the hot spot check box is a Data Roaming box do i need to enable this box also does anybody know the benefits.

Paul
You only need roaming enabled if you want to use the 3 SIM outside of the UK.

Brilliant thanks Wookie

Is there any truth if you set roaming enabled it will speed up the connection process when you start the engine.

Roaming doesn't work for UK SIMs used in the UK, the networks don't allow it. If they did, when you were in the sticks where say there was only O2 coverage and you had a Voda SIM it would allow you to connect for any type of call and data not just to use the emergency number. For this reason field engineers with some companies have phones that take 2 SIMs and if their 'native' SIM doesn't work they have an Isle of Man SIM fitted in the second slot which will then roam onto any of the UK networks that are available at the location.

Hi, I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned as this is quite a long thread but you need to be a bit careful using the sim as a WiFi hotspot if you have people sitting in the car with ipads, phones etc. with auto updates enabled. As far as any device is concerned this is a regular WiFi hotspot so it will go ahead and just download stuff that it would not normally do when the device knows it is on cellular.

So in an extreme case I could get in the car with my wife and kids on the way to holiday, a new update turns up for "Full Throttle Remastered" (3.9GB) and each of our devices will begin to download. That's 12GB used up before we arrive at Fleet Services :D

Just something to bear in mind as I have been caught out by this using MiFi devices abroad before. If you are going to use a hotspot like this ensure that auto updates are off on any connected devices.

Excellent point Sid. Haven't seen that mentioned before so well spotted.

PS. I really hope your surname is Boggle. Fantastic!
Unfortunately Boggle is not my real name. I just model myself on Sid James' character in "Carry on Camping" :D

A question on activating the 3 sim card.
Can this be done in car? or does it have to be done beforehand in a phone?

Thanks

Just stick it in the sim slot. From memory I thìnk all you have to do then is switch on the mobile data toggle in the connectivity menu in ICTP. There may have been an additional action in that menu, but it was all in the car. No preregistration required.

You only need to put it in a phone if you want to register online to access your account and see how much data you have left (needs to send u texts to activate your acct). If you're not bothered about that, then plug and play!!!

If you don't do that, how do you know when you're running out of data?!

#214 ·
You don't, but based on the average usage your 12 mths will run out before your data!

I dont have the hotspot enabled, largely due to the fact that 4G wifi and teenagers dont mix. My averaged monthly usage is going to be in the low 100s MB. So yes the 12 mths will go first

For those worried about accidental data usage (such as devices believing they are on wifi and downloading large updates), you can set a data usage limit in the settings (e.g. set it to limit to 1GB per month).

Having set a 300mb limit for last 10 months & never bounced off limit once, in France it's been using 1GB every half day...

This is despite all devices wi-fi being turned off after day 1.

3 sim.

At a loss to understand why this is happening, but now run out if data with 4 days before return journey.....

Wow..thats really odd. Ive just come back to blighty from 10 days/2000 miles driving round Spain and France. Have used 206MB in the month i've owned the car (Ictp). I used it for:

1. Traffic updates - a bit hit and miss. Probably describe as indicative at best
2. Providing arrival time updates. Works ok. But its a pain that i couldnt use my phone contacts and had to add contacts manually
3. Connecting to the route planner app. Great idea, a bit rubbish in practice. Probably worked about 20% of the time. Mostly due to thinking that the car was about 300 miles from where i parked it (ie previous days location). Says it syncs to car, but car doesnt show it usually.

Didnt use satellite view or anything....

Anyone had problems replacing a pre-loaded SIM with a new one?

I've put the new one in, but it still says 'time to buy more data' when you use search/browser - as if it's still reading the old card....

When the car is connected, it shows the '3G' icon, but don't think it is actually working at all....

Is there something I'm missing, or is this another 'fault'?

So, no one has had any problems when replacing a sim card that has run out of data?

Mine is due to run out in a week or so, I will let you know when I replace it.
Thanks Jim!

Just got to the bottom of what was happening.

I replaced a 'Three' pre-paid sim with another, new 'Three' pre-paid. It didn't work. Kept telling me I needed to 'buy' more data. It showed the '3G' symbol, and according to connectivity settings was connected to 'Three' and had used 20mb over last two days, but traffic just said either ' not available now', or 'Expect light traffic' - even if sitting in a tailback....

I today bought an EE sim and put that in. After registering it via the browser, it then showed traffic info etc.

Put the new 'three' card back in and...... it worked without registering.

Either my car is, as suspected, a unique little bundle of querks, or the system gets 'stuck' if it gets presented with a new card on the same network & doesn't automatically re-set itself.

Or the world is flat, and I'm about to sail over the edge.......

Excuse an ignorant question but as a new F Pace owner why can't I just plug in my mobile phone and use the data on there rather than buying another Sim? I'm sure there is an obvious answer and I'm being lazy because I've not had time to read the manual yet so I'm obviously missing something.
